Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP):

This internationally recognized neonatal education program is based on a standardized, team-based approach to the immediate care and resuscitation of the newborn infant, wherever the delivery occurs.  Provincial hospitals have access to hospital based or regional NRP Instructors who can provide NRP provider level courses to all health care providers who are responsible for obstetrical or neonatal care. The course can be delivered as a workshop or as self paced learning. The skills covered include immediate care of the newborn, assessment, suctioning, delivery of free flow oxygen, bag and mask ventilation, chest compressions, intubation and administration of medications. Successful course completion results in registration as an NRP provider with the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) which is valid for a period of two years.  Refresher courses are completed to renew registration.  It is important to note that NRP is not a certification program.  For more information - click here.

For information on NRP courses in your area, contact the Education Department at your nearest hospital.  For other information on NRP, please contact Susan White (777-4868).

Acute Care of At-Risk Newborn (ACoRN)

Additional steps after immediate resuscitation of the newborn may involve post resuscitation stabilization management for the newborn who is sick or compromised. A group of Canadian clinicians has developed an educational program that promotes an organized and comprehensive assessment and management approach that can be utilized in all centers delivering newborn care.

The ACoRN program was launched in Canada in October 2005. To date, courses have been provided in all Eastern Health centres that routinely offer Maternal/Newborn services. Courses are available upon request.  More information on ACoRN can be obtained from the Perinatal Program.

For other information on ACoRN, please contact Susan White (777-4868) at the Provincial Perinatal Program and check out this site - http://www.acornprogram.net/
