Perinatal Database

The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Perinatal Program (NLPPP) collects, summarizes, interprets and reports on perinatal events, outcomes, and care processes at the provincial, regional and community level. This information is used for surveillance activities, for maternal / infant health program and policy development, and to facilitate and support research and quality assurance initiatives in perinatology and developmental outcomes.

The Perinatal Database is an excellent resource for decision makers and researchers. The records that are collected are listed here. Below outlines the capture of data within the four Regional Health Authorities:

  • St. John's since April 1, 2001

  • Labrador since January 2005

  • rest of Eastern Health and Grenfell since October 2007

  • Western Health since April 2010

  • Central Health since August 2012

Before the data is presented in a report (for example click here), audits are performed on each variable to ensure accurate information is collected and maintained. This information contributes to local, provincial, and national datasets thus providing analysis of current health care practices, future policy development and research. Most importantly, the Perinatal Database helps to ensure quality care is provided to all new families in this province.
