Perinatal Database

The development and implementation of a Provincial Perinatal Database System is one of the activities included in the program's terms of reference. The goal is to collect, summarize, interpret and report on perinatal events, outcomes and care processes at the provincial, regional and community level.

The Perinatal Database, which is a collection of health and perinatal records data, contains demographic variables, procedures, interventions, maternal and newborn diagnoses, morbidity and mortality information for all pregnancies and births occurring within three of four Regional Health Authorities:

  • St. John's since April 1, 2001

  • Labrador since January 2005

  • rest of Eastern Health and Grenfell since October 2007

  • Western Health since April 2010

The Perinatal Database is an excellent resource for decision makers and researchers. The records that are collected are listed here.

Before the data is presented in a report (for example click here), audits are performed on each variable to ensure accurate information is collected and maintained. This information contributes to local, provincial, and national datasets thus providing analysis of current health care practices, future policy development and research. Most importantly, the Perinatal Database helps to ensure quality care is provided to all new families in this province.
